Editor-in-Chief Ed Loh explains why the new 2014 Cadillac CTS has been named Motor Trend Car of the Year for 2014.

Read the full story here: http://www.motortrend.com/oftheyear/car/1401_2014_motor_trend_car_of_the_year_cadillac_cts/

Motor Trend’s Car of the Year program is open to any all-new or substantially upgraded 2014 automobile. Rather than being compared against one another, contending vehicles are first put through Motor Trend’s full battery of performance tests to measure acceleration, braking, and limit handling.

All contenders are then evaluated on three separate courses at a professional automotive test center before finalists are selected. Out of 22 contending 2014 models, Motor Trend’s judges picked seven Car of the Year finalists, in addition to the Cadillac CTS:

BMW 4 Series
Chevrolet Corvette
Jaguar F-Type
Kia Forte
Mazda3
Mazda6
Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Each finalist is then driven on a real-world road loop that provides a range of surfaces and traffic conditions to evaluate ride and handling, engine and transmission smoothness and responsiveness, wind and road noise, and ergonomics. In the final phase of Car of the Year, Motor Trend judges debate and evaluate each vehicle against the awards six key criteria:

Design Advancement – well-executed exterior and interior styling; innovative vehicle packaging; good selection and use of materials.

Engineering Excellence – total vehicle concept and execution; clever solutions to packaging, manufacturing and dynamics issues; cost-effective tech that benefits the consumer.

Efficiency – low fuel consumption and carbon footprint, relative to the vehicle’s competitive set.

Safety – a vehicle’s ability to help the driver avoid a crash, as well as the secondary safety measures that protect its occupants from harm during a crash.

Value – competitive price and equipment levels, measured against those of vehicles in the same market segment.

Performance of Intended Function – how well the vehicle does the job its planners, designers, and engineers intended it to do.

After 10 full days of testing, driving and deliberating, Motor Trend selected the CTS as its Car of the Year for the second time in six years.

The 2014 Cadillac CTS is offered with three powertrains. A 272-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder is standard and EPA-rated for 20/30 mpg city/highway. A 321-hp naturally aspirated V-6 is available. Rear-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive is optional. Exclusive to the rear-wheel-drive CTS Vsport is the all-new 420-hp 3.6-liter Cadillac Twin-Turbo V-6 engine.

The 2014 CTS is also the first Cadillac vehicle to receive the brand’s eight-speed automatic. Pricing starts at $46,025, including a $925 destination charge.

Since the first Motor Trend Car of the Year was awarded to the Cadillac brand in 1949, Cadillac has won the title three additional times — for the full brand again in 1952, with the 1992 Seville Touring Sedan, and with the second-generation CTS sedan in 2008.

Andy Geiger says:

Lol, look at that. 450 butt hurt Germans or Mercedes and BMW fanboys so sad
that one of their favorite cars didn’t win. Cadillac clearly deserved to
win this year.

MrStripyHead says:

they only have a life span of a year before they fall apart

Michael Glass says:

The new and improved version of the old CTS. Magnetic wheels, twin turbo
and all this car is worth buying.

zoomingvictor says:

Good job! Cadillac team.

unicorns.R.real says:

I recently test drove the CTS, along with the Audi A8, Mercedes S550, and
BMW 535i, and it blew me away. The 4 cylinder version I tested was an
absolute blast to drive, and while the cabin wasn’t as opulent as the
others (not to mention the horrid cue system and haptic feedback controls)
I’d settle to own one of these in a heartbeat.

I’m also a diehard German saloon fan.

K JOSH says:

I guess motortrend is being paid by gm because they love every single car
they make and after a year or so, they don’t like it…

Stefan Unson says:

And now it’s average price is about the same as the Germans. Is this still
a bargain killer?

marc1093280 says:

I wish the CTS Vsport came with the 6.2L LT1 V8, which is lighter, more
compact, and more powerful than the TT V6. Yes, the 6.2L LT1 V8 is pretty
sophisticated.

Adrian Hetmanski says:

Wow talk about lame! CTS is butch w a bunch of spangly shiny crap, US
doesn’t know how to make a luxury car if it bit them in the ass.
Another idiotic example from people that barely know anything about cars.
We continue to see lousy american car winning awards, while companies are
going down the toilet because of padded sales numbers so that the investors
don’t run away screening in horror. GM out of bancrupcy yet? Oh wait,
government bail out, great management right there guys. Oh yeah and
hundreds of thousands of them sitting on lots just sunbathing.

Incredible *-*

trilingualkid says:

Bring back 2008-2012 looks…this thing look too much like a Mercedes front
and rounded back like a CLS

SunDownPoint says:

So many preconceived ideas of the Cadillac when people have no idea what
it’s even all about. When will this age of idea from the 80’s American cars
die? This is what happens when the population is uneducated on the idea and
is blindly following decades old media.

The CTS deserves it’s place as car of the year as I have test driven one
myself and it is simply astonishing. And I think MotorTrend has enough
experience and integrity to see that much more than the keyboard warriors
with their weak ideas that are not even their own, who know nothing of what
they talk about and of most do not even own a car. It’s a form of brand
racism. Anyone smart enough and open minded enough to take this car for a
try without the biased mentality will fall in love with it.

1Ministras says:

Wow, motor trend picked american car for car of the year, i totally
,,didnt” expect that.

Zeta Yiu says:
Ali Ouassini says:

do not buy this crap for a second. how much was the payout from cadillac

porsche? they never were and they will never be.

Cadillac CTS “car of the year” :)) i can’t stop laughing…americans, you
don’t know how to build a car to look nice. compare 1980-90′ cars with
european cars from that years, it’s disgusting how yours cars look. not to
mention the present models, anyway america need’s to reborn again or to
invite imigrants to teach how it’s done. =))))

ridgeline006 says:

stop complaining go school and learn how to judge cars maybe you will
understand it more than just name and fine leather and horsepower this why
a lab is smarter than a blond

Black_Blazars says:

‘MURRRICA!!!

Gondee says:

I went and test drove it. I just don’t understand how this is “that good”.
The interior felt plastic and cheap, the infotainment system was SOOOO slow
and simply bad. Handling felt almost akin to my fathers 2003 E500. Im not
saying it doesn’t deserve it, but it certainly isn’t better than some of
the new BMW’s and E series sedans.

Cadillac CTS says:
Trades46 says:

I used to hate on American cars, but Cadillac has finally proven to be a
great competitor in the luxury segment, if not the best.
And for the Euro-centric fools, you have to look not only where cars are
made from, but what makes them great. The whole ‘American car picked by
Americans’ is just fallacy & frankly, snobbishness.

Carlos A. says:

Oh and BTW to all the haters, Cadillac knows what there doing. This car has
more quality, style, safety, and performance than the shitty imports you
people buy.

disciprine says:

It’s always amusing to me that people can’t just enjoy whatever brand they
want without going negative on other brands. Talk about some inadequacy
issues.

I thought google+ implementation was gonna help fix these mundane comments
from fanboys all over the place? ;)

Nb says:

M5 with 30 mpg? Maybe two m5s put together. Nice job cadillac

korzym says:

Ed loh sucks. Fire that bastard.

oneshooted66 says:

srsly fuck this new youtubecomment thing

888TopGear888 says:

This didn’t sound like you Ed. It sounded like you were reading off a
script written by someone else who might have gotten a “bonus” for writing
what they did. Not necessarily saying the Caddy is crap, I haven’t driven
it, but I believe the new S-Class was a better contender than the CTS. Even
by your MT’s 6 criterea:
Safety: So what if the CTS has 10 airbags? A Camry has 10 airbags, you cant
tell me the S isn’t safer.
-Value: Even a 2.0 CTS with all the safety equipment you mentioned is
nearly $65k. Its not exactly a cheap car and the S Class is definitely
worth the extra 40k. I would understand if it was 45k for a well equipped
model, that would be a great value but the damn thing starts at $45.
-Efficiency: 30mpg is impressive? The S550 with a twin turbo V8 gets 27mpg.
-Advancement in design: Design is subjective, the S Class is beautiful in
person, the CTS seems a bit unproportionate to me.
-Engineering excellence: Im pretty sure we can all agree on this one.
-Performance of Intended function: The cabin is so quiet you wouldnt be
able to ear people talking outside your car. Driving over pot holes feels
like driving over a quarter. AND it does 0-60 in 4.8.

Williamson Uxbridge says:

This car is Awesome! We are very proud!

Porks says:

Whatever, car of the year is out of the reach for most folks.

Daniel Weiss says:

Not the S-Class

Jonathan Kennedy says:

Great new direction for Cadillac! ATS and CTS are thoroughly impressive.
CTS is the 5 series killer, ATS feels more sporty and powerful than 3
series and kills a4 and IS. Can’t wait to see what the future holds. Kudos
Caddy

Alex MacLean says:

Lots of idiots commenting. People who drove a Cavalier 10 years ago think a
Cadillac can’t be good because and American company made it. Absolutely no
logic at all.

Matthew Barris says:

Prior Motor Trend videos that delved into the process of choosing the Motor
Trend Car of the Year were longer and more in-depth, but they were
criticized as they made the process seem arbitrary (perhaps because they
attempted — and failed — to be comical). So instead of releasing a
BETTER, long and in-depth video to show everyone that Motor Trend is
actually capable of choosing a Car of the Year in a competent and sound
manner, they release this three-minute, pissant video to try to avoid
criticism. Too bad. You had an opportunity to prove the critics wrong and
show us that your process is respectable, but instead it looks like you
were afraid that releasing another long video would affirm and reinforce
the same criticism.

juan tafoya says:

Fully loaded Mazda 6 is lightyears ahead of this especially for the price.
The new Skyactive brake regenerative system will give the new mazda 6 about
40 mpg all this in the sportiest funnest family car to drive

Dhaher Alelew says:

And many are complaining again! Every time I see a video about a Cadillac
many are just complaining. Cadillac, like Jaguar, has finally decided to be
a better car, you cannot talk shit about Cadillac as if they were Hyundai
Genesis. Cadillacs are not crap and the CTS is truly the car of the year,
you need to try one of those to understand first! And yes it is so good you
may think between it, a 650 grand coupe and an Audi S7, with illustrating
the fact that a Merc CLS 500/550 cannot stand a chance if compared. Only if
you like the Merc’s design more!

Tito Caceres says:

i don’t get all the hating, this cadillac is stunning, it does not look
like anything on the road, the design has evolved, the quality is palpable,
and the handling is world class, and the value is hard to beat, why would
you discount all these merits ? i don’t understand all the disagreements.
Congratulations to Cadillac.

vganji says:

Congratulations to the Cadillac Team! You made America proud!
