On this episode of Ignition, presented by Tire Rack, Carlos Lago tests the new 2015 Volkswagen Golf R. With nearly 300 hp, all-wheel drive, and, for the first time, completely defeatable stability control, will this upscale and refined hot hatch deliver the driving experience we look for? Through Motor Trend’s standard array of tests and a trip into the mountains, we find out.

Ignition appears every other Monday on the Motor Trend youtube channel. http://www.youtube.com/motortrend

Carlos tests a Hatchback Classic: The new All-Wheel-Drive Volkswagen Golf R

Motor Trend Magazine says:

On this episode of Ignition, Carlos Lago tests the new 2015 Volkswagen Golf
R.

Do you think its worth the premium price tag?

Presented By Tire Rack

TalibanSlayer says:

So minus the AWD why not just get an APR stg 2 on a regular GTI ? Is the R
package really worth the extra 10K ?

Chad Lombardo says:

Impressive, but who wants to spend 40k on a golf lmao

STAG162 says:

Hmm.. and who was saying last week that America hates the hatchback?

Eugene Hvorostyanov says:

Nice car that will have 380 hp with only stage 1 ecu tune.

vkgiotis says:

I was a bit disappointed with the figure 8 performance and cornering
g-forces

Torrey B says:

turns stability control off, doesn’t even try to get sideways…

Alex Smith says:

*A 200mph speedometer in a car with less than 300hp in 2015!? Seriously?*

Michael Schauer says:

The amount of ignorant comments never ends

zech007 says:

Buying a golf R is like buying 2 cars, you have a nice practical daily
driver that you can actually live with and if wanted you can take it to the
tracks.

markalexander774 says:

This car would be great if it was only like $20,000. But $40,000 is
ridiculous. You could get a Mustang GT, a Camaro SS, a 3 series BMW, a
C-class Mercedes, or any number of other more preferable cars for less
money than this. Who in their right mind would pay that much money for this
car?

Filipe Macedo says:

it’s a nice car.. BUT Seat Leon Cupra is a little bit better, for me….
Golf R is AWD… but don’t feel like that… FOR ME, the Leon is the best
hothatch/family car at the moment

Tyai Littol says:

Its a nice car no doubt but everybody has it now in europe. And is annoying
see this car everywhere.

Rafael C. says:

So, you Americans complained you wouldn’t get the Golf R, they gave it to
you, and you keep talking shit about it? That’s why you don’t get the RS6

bbullock41617 says:

Fuck what anyone says, still one of the best hatchbacks to date!

Trap-Set says:

All these AWD ~40K cars must be making Subaru pretty nervous.

Pleb Stone says:

lol 5 cylinder engine noise from the speakers

DirtDude117 says:

The Audi S3 is the exact same car for this year, and when they are priced
within 1k-2k of each other, which would you choose?

Neither, because for $40k you can buy the Ford Focus RS, which is a
supercar compared to both of these.

The.Hardcore.Health.Model. says:

$37,000 base price?! Just 292hp?! No stick shift? Not looking sporty? Is
Volkswagen kidding?

carstengerm says:

it looks so boring not to say shitty

TomTom15000 says:

Hmm, Head 2 Head with a 2015 Civic Type R? I’d love to see that :P

Samzilla says:

18inch wheels look way better

B000gnish says:

This would be great in Canada, too bad you can’t get it here

ReventadorLP1500-2 says:

You’d be close to 400 hp with a tune, intercooler+downpipe, and exhaust.
I’d do that.

A C says:

I’m proud to say i have one of the 500 that first came to the U.S.; mines
#262! and I love this car!

civicsr2cool says:

What does this even compete with?

sk8s4aliving says:

Re-test the Head 2 Head against the Focus ST on the track, now that you can
turn off the ESC

Krazorr says:

SHould i get the Ford Focus st 2015? or this Golf R 2015

Gijs Wolfs says:

In my opinion Carlos is the most likeable presenter from Motor Trend

bench175 says:

A lot of people are saying, “$37k for Golf?” and then they’re not giving
any good alternatives. Please list an AWD four-door car this practical,
this fast, this nice and for the same price or less?

scomberscombrus says:

why not a track test?

saleem83 says:

Sti is so much better when u compare options and style for the same price.
Like he said. The only people that will be happy with this car is a die
hard hippy vw fan. Loved the original r32. This one sucks. Bravo volkswagon
.

Rick LeRoy says:

Not worth it over the GTI? What about those of us who have this thing
called WINTER! This is a great alternative to an STI. How come automotive
journalists don’t test in the snow any more?

A side note, too bad they’d never make a Jetta R, too close to the S3 in
that case. I’d get a Jetta R.

tristananvilcaster says:

Nice car

P4WELpl says:

I wonder how you guys achieve those “over-optimistic” 0-60 times. The Golf
Mk. 7 R was timed at 4.9-5.1 seconds doing 0-100 kph by European reviewers
and even though 60 mph equals to 96 kph, those 4 kph won’t take half a
second. It seems that every car reviewed by MT achieves times a few tenths
better than what the others get. How come?

Skyhunter says:

I hate the trend that everybody is going away from a manual transmission.
Yes, its available, but not form launch on. I mean come on, who the fuck
would put a DSG in a Hot-Hatch?!?!?

Jonathan Ortiz says:

I think when the Ford Focus RS comes out, the R is going to be outshined. I
really like the golf R, but the RS is just superior in my eyes.

semiautoriflelover1 says:

My grandma said it looks like a nice car lol

TechNation says:

Jealous! The Golf R is definitely one of the cars on my list to drive.

jeff rosenberg says:

anyone think they will ever get a sunroof ? i want this for a pt dd but no
dam sunroof ! lol

Vidar Mathisen says:
crankfj says:

golf is shit, no matter which model

Stunt Growtopia says:

Hatchback? Did you mispell that?
It’s supposed tobe “check engine.”

Lost Traction says:

The Golf R is a good packet

Dan S says:

Not worth the premium price to me, would rather get the GTI myself.

Kenshin Himura says:

Cars today are severely overpriced. I can buy a used car for 10k that could
eat most cars made today for breakfast.

SpillyFilms says:

Just remember guys, These cars will hold their value for a very long time,
you get cars nowadays that are a few years old and after owning for only a
few years the value drops a ridiculous amount, these will hold a higher
value much longer, and these cars are very impressive in my opinion, just
an opinion, but they WILL hold their value. :)

amill1563 says:

I’m not hearing the excitement in your voice Carlos, for this car.

Gilbert Mendez says:

bottom line is cars are just to fucking expensive
