On this episode of The Downshift, we talk with the designers of Toyota’s new FT-1 concept, the car that could become the next Toyota Supra. The concept was designed by Calty Design Research who has been responsible for some of the Toyota brands most interesting designs including the FJ Cruiser concept, 2000 Celica and the Scion tC. Could the FT-1 concept make its way to market and usher in a new era of Toyota sports cars? Only time will tell.

The Downshift appears every other Tuesday on the Motor Trend channel. http://www.youtube.com/motortrend

rosselbossel says:

a Supra was affordable this does not look so it can’t be a new supra

Nakama Luffy says:

this car is going to be more than 100k. Look at the steering wheel, that is
about 10k lol

matt mccreanor says:

“Toyota has nothing in the way of sports cars”

What about the GT86??

TheJeffum says:

God damn looks expensive can’t they make a cheaper version?

grant roland says:

I’m not for this concept of creating all of these nice and expensive cars
just for the rich and powerful poor people want to give fast an powerful
sexy car also where are the cars for the person who make 45 grand a year ,
why cant this be every man’s car that he dives in stop in go traffic for 2
to 4 hours every day back in forth to a meaningless job where we want to
murder our bosses or at lest tie his ass up and beat the ever- loving shit
out of them with a bag over there heads in drop them off in the desert in
the middle of no were in before that make them ingest so much liquor that
they vomit crap for a week !! oh weight a minute I’m retired my bad .

Mateus Mendes says:

Looks great and it’s beautiful now, i can’t wait to see him complete! Will
this beat the NSX 2015? Hmm let’s see.. More than 400hp and projected to be
cost 60k. Toyota just finish this concept and put much speed, i can’t wait
anymore! T.T

Blake Johnson says:

Toyota is stupid for even thinking of producing this car. It looks like it
will cost well over 100k which puts it out of reach for 90 percent of the
human population. A new supra should be affordable, maybe 370Z price range
ish, so that people will actually buy and tune them. If toyota is seriously
considering bringing back the supra, they need to do it right, and this is
not it. Didn’t they learn their lesson with the LFA? Awesome car, which did
nothing more than waste money. As a long time supra fan and a former proud
owner of an 86.5 mark III, I believe the recipe for a successful new supra
is as follows: a sub 40k starting price, RWD, weight not exceeding 3400
lbs, a turbocharged engine coded 3JZ, good but not over the top styling,
and finally a proper 6 or 7 speed MANUAL transmission. Toyota, if you want
to get back into the sports car market with a new supra, please make it an
affordable, good, fast car that normal people can actually afford to own.
Make the supra what it was but better, not this fucking futuristic race car
that’s impossible to obtain, modify or live with everyday.

Kratos X says:

Lol, The rumored price tag of this car will be around 100 grand. The car
looks great and all, but not many will be able to afford this. You can get
this cars performance for a fraction of the price with an old moded supra.
Nice job Toyota. I don’t get why companies keep adding all this stupid,
futuristic shit to cars. A simple, newer model supra would’ve been great.

Toyota of Boerne says:

Who would like to see the revival of Toyota-branded sports cars, starting
with the FT-1 Concept as the basis for a consumer-available Supra? Let us
know what you think!

Jamie Stirzaker says:

The car looks fantastic, just how a 2020 Corvette will look like.

MrVinny ThePoo says:

Side view look like Toyota 86

Devonte Davis says:

I think it looks amazing, but at the same time, there doesnt seem to be any
room for personalization. Further so, no manual transmission which is
extremely disheartening. I dont even wanna know the price

I3igMichi says:

I would buy it, i think this is a nice car and i love the design :3

Omar I says:

All the people complaining about this not being affordable,
Yes this isnt what supera represented thats why Toyota has FRS.
Supera was sports car, not super/hyper car.

thatboyrick1 says:

Why in the hell would a car company “get out of the sports car market for a
while” they lost me after all these years of no Supra, I don’t even check
for Toyota sports cars anymore. They have LOTS of work to do

dashbmw says:

1- it looks to be untouchable in price.
2- Toyota should be concerned with energy and it to be electric.

Lars taggart says:

If it looks like that i would be sad that i’m poor

JDM Toyota says:

I love the supra with the 2jz but I heard that this cars engine is going to
be a inline 4 turbo with electric motors making 455 horse power. I really
wish they would make a v6 twin turbo to go against the Gtr.. The thing I
don’t like about the design is the nose I think they should tone that down.

dsid1127 says:

Have you guys ever heard of a “concept car”? THIS would be over 100k.
Obviously a production model will not have screens on the steering wheel or
heads up displays like they showed. Look at any car model compared to their
concept. All the coolest stuff is gone.

KeMz says:

Still a Japshit.

hjibuloibgiol987 says:

I guarantee that it will come out within 3 years and it’ll be called the
GT-1 and they will dumb down the design like crazy for it to be affordable
to the general public. Look at the GT-86 concept, the FT-86, for example.
The concept looked like a million dollars and the final product looked like
shit compared to the concept. The BRZ, FRS, and GT-86 look like cheap shit.
I wouldn’t mind paying an extra $10k for it to look similar to the concept.
Didn’t really stop from buying my own FRS, but it could of been better.

Tremain Bowman says:

This could never be the next supra. It’s too supercar specific. I love the
design, but not as a Supra. The supra was not a high cost vehicle and it
was simple like the Subaru engined 86 of today. It was simple because it
was a sports car for the everyday man. A car for the tuners. This is a
gorgeous looking vehicle that will probably be right beneath the supercar.
They said it themselves on the video. The Supra is legendary, because of
it’s life in the tuner world and for no other reason. I lived in Japan for
years and there was always a new design for the next Supra in their car
mags. Never happened. Toyota is infamous for projects like this that never
come to fruition.

Wesley Johnson says:

Toyota, please put this into production, pleeeeeease

saabsly1 . says:

The kid in me says: ‘I want one’

Now the adult in me says: ‘I want TWO!’ lol

BAGREM says:

NISSAN GT

oneviwatara says:

The interior look shit.

Henrik Risager says:

say what you want , japanese cars is still some of the best , not like
American shit cars and german cars with a lot of problems , did i say wv ,
yes i did, good car but to many problems on newer models

Yiannis Diakos says:

Proud owner of the 3 previous Supra where the last model I owned it for 20
years, I see in this FT1 concept many nice things that can remind Supra.
Supra is unique in the sense that it is a pure driver’s car but at the same
time is not forgetting the passenger. Even the 2 sits behind!! P.S. Let’s
not just produce a new Ferrari or a NSX. Supra is something different!

Miguel Perez says:

Toyota has to make a car better than the GTR. I dont think this car is
gonna beat the GTR. So. GTR all the way

José Pineda says:
Austin Green says:

Definetly NOT the New supra

Stephen Lee says:

I don’t like that interior much. But dat body… dat booty… dat car.
Toyota hasn’t sold a sports/exoticish car in a while. Yeah theres the GT86,
but that was partially designed by Subaru. Yeah theres the LFA, but even
Yamaha had a good bit to do with it. Toyota NEEDS to sell this car. Not
because they don’t have good sales figures (probably best in the world),
not because their line up is boring (but lets be honest, it is), but
because… look at it.

Steve Kale says:

The cars that deserves more attention are Chevy Corvette,Ford GT,and Dodge
Viper , fuck you Toyota you piece of boring ass shit company, go suck your
prius’s small fucking dick!

spentfromnz says:

Is this guy smoking crack? “Scion has the FRS, but Toyota currently has no
iconic sports car in it’s range”.

albert jimenez says:

why are we hating this car?Its called FT1 not supra even if it is the next
generation “Supra” It wouldnt be called Supra so what if its expensive ?
look at it this way The gtr went from affordable to 100k+ if they want to
make this car 100k+ so what. They just want to make a new can that can rival
GTR and give some more performance from toyota .lets face it they dont have
anything like this rn.So why not?Why spend so much time making the FT1 to
sell it for 40k as starting if anything the company looses moneyy because
it would cost them more to make them than what its selling for.Ya feels?it
would make no sense .

wellseriously says:

I’d like to consider this the new Japanese Corvette. amongst all factors:
Price, Style, power, drivetrain

Supersportwagen 15 says:

Hey Guys. If you love Supercars check up my YouTube Channel
“Supersportwagen 15”.

mike reynolds says:

I agree 100% with you blake

LittleValo says:

They need to give it its old lights look back. Looks like a damn Farari

The Rabbit Hole says:

IT’s obvious that TOyota is trying to catch up with Ferrari and Porsche and
other super are manufacturers. LFA was their first attempt. This I think
will do better. It won’t be fr the common man though

benson420710 says:

when he said the scion frs I started to think of its other two twins which
are subaru and Toyota hahaha. this is the t1 Not the supra ,if it was a
supra it would be cheap for this one reason,it wasn’t made to look like
aerofoil crumpled up into a super/hyper car , ill take a ls300 or r32 any
day over this personally. did I forget to mention the aerobody kit probably
costs more than the car itself.

HarjRadio says:

I dno.. I’ve seen a 2013 GT86 with a 2JZ engine and I feel if a little more
work on the transmission and maybe a bit more on the body would make it
perfect to be a new supra.

BlackStar250874 says:

So 2000 Celica was a GREAT design? I really do not think so.
For many, it took the backseat compared to previous models. And not
providing the option to include GT-Four layout.

Grayson Kaplan says:

No stick = gay

Not a drivers car clearly. Nobody wants to use paddle shifters.

But I do like it other than that

ThePlofadi says:

I don’t like how it looks it is really ugly. (engaged comment war).

Shawn P says:

It looks like a pimped up Scion FRS

Garrett Phillips says:

What’s with all these bullshit automatics ? They better have a few manual
transmissions!

MrDeathprof says:

this will destroy any super cars on the planet if this is the next supra

Paul Maka says:

Cut and paste from European cars
They should’ve stayed with supra design and make it a bit newer but more
affordable so they can sell it.
100k price tag you will be competing with a lot of good fast cars…
